Sufficient Grace

September 17 2020

"He hath said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my power is made perfect in weakness." .....2 Corinthians 12:9

It is significant that Paul says very little about the nature of the "visions and revelations of the Lord" alluded to in this chapter. It would not be profitable, he says, to boast of them, and only against his desires and under strong compulsion does he mention the experiences of "fourteen years ago." Fourteen years! And yet with many of us, the moment we feel we have something from God, the whole neighbourhood knows it! To suppress it even for two years would be a feat. But Paul, even after so long, does not tell us what that vision was, save that it was a further revealing of Christ. He tells us however of the subsequent "thorn in the flesh" and of God's gracious answer to his prayer, "My grace is sufficient for thee." It is that answer, not the visions, that has brought strength to so many!

Today in the real Church as the body of Christ, we need to know that God's grace is not just a nice pleasant word, it is a better covenant principle of God. It is better than the first covenant which was the principle of God's law, as in man trying to obey God's holy Commandments. It is God's grace that He Himself comes into our lives to live out a perfect life in us by His Son Jesus Christ in the person of His Holy Spirit.

When God looks at our life now, He looks not at our performance, but at the performance of the life of His Son in us! When we cooperate with that fact by acknowledging Him and allowing Him to be expressed in place of our 'self' then are we the most joyful and the most powerful people on the face of this earth. We need to become so weakened in 'Self' that His power in us may become perfected. The 'I' in us must decrease before the 'He' in us can increase! Truly, His grace is sufficient for us and His power is being perfected in us as 'self' is weakened!
